for your traveling and beach endeavors.

SunBurn and Tanning Tips

SunBurn:
Sunburn is a result from an over exposure to the SUNS Ultraviolet (UV) rays. Almost all of us are at risk from getting a sunburn, whether you are dark skinned or fair skinned. Blondes and redheads are especially susceptible. A persons skin will receive redness, pain, swelling, and even blistering from this over exposure. Peeling will usually occur several days later. Pain of a sunburn will usually occur between 6 and 48 hours after exposure.

SunBurn Prevention:
  • It is best to avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the suns rays are strongest.
  • Use a sunscreen with SPF of 15 or greater.
  • Beware of those Hazy cloudy days, you will think your safe but you may burn the most.
  • Sunlamps, reflectors, or tanning beds produce high levels of ultraviolet radiation.
  • Medications such as antibiotics can accelerate the risk of SunBurn, so consult your physician!

SunBurn Help:
  • Try to use cool wet compresses for first 48 hours.
  • Do not use ice.
  • Cool oatmeal baths may be helpful (consult your Pharmacist).
  • May use aloe in first 48 hours.
  • Do not use lotions or petroleum jelly in the first 48 hours, they tend top hold in the heat!
  • Apply moisturizing lotions after 48 hours.
  • Aspirin taken as directed may help ease pain (consult you Physician First).

In any case, just be smart and use the recommended SPF SunSreens and Sunblock products and you will not have to worry about SunBurn, or ruining your vacation.

Here is another side of the coin with regard to benefits from the Sun

The Sun can give you Beneficial Effects:
A reliable source of Vitamin D, sunlight eliminates Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) which produces symptoms such as insomnia, carbohydrate cravings, depression and sadness. It is reported that exposure to UV light may have some of the same affects as exercise, such as decreasing blood pressure, lower resting heart rate and increasing the blood output of the heart. Furthermore sunlight helps reduce the risk of breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Moderate sun exposure in combination with suncare products can help maximize the beneficial effects of the sun, just as nature planned it.

Tanning
Tanning is a process done in moderation. You will start off with a very high SPF (depending on your skin type), and as you tan over time gradually reduce the SPF to a lower protection as directed by the manufacturer's specifications. Remember, after you are through tanning, be sure to use moisturizer's to help obtain your color and prevent peeling.

When using SunTan lotions or oils, be sure to use a Tanning Product which contains no Mineral Oil. Reason being, mineral oil is too thick to penetrate deep into the skin, it clogs pores, remains greasy and prevents the sunscreen and other ingredients from helping more than just the surface layers of the skin. In short, your tan will last much longer if you use a product without mineral oil!
